Display of Affection

One of the few fun parts of planning a wedding is registering for gifts. People find that hard to believe, given ALL of the other thrill-rides of wedding planning, like picking out seat-cushion colors and floral arrangement and choosing centerpieces and drinking Drano out of the bottle…etc.

In the candy section of Bed, Bath & Beyond, where I registered for a box of Jujyfruits (no joke), I found a display of Super Mario Bros candy tins. It’s not so much the candy that I’m interested, but the cardboard display box (which is very much not for sale).

I ask the girl behind the counter if I can buy the display box. She has to ask the assistant manager. Evidently she’s worried he’ll come out that afternoon and say, “Katy, why is the ridiculous Super Mario Bros. mushroom-shaped candy display box missing? What the hell is going on here?!”

I ask the assistant manager if I can “buy” it from him. He responds with a look that says, “Just take it. Anything to end this conversation. I can’t believe anybody’s marrying you on purpose…”

And when we leave, I say, “Thanks so much. This is so exciting.” The sales girl and assistant manager exchange an odd look, clearly not sure whether I was referring to my upcoming marriage or the Super Mario Bros candy display.

To be honest, I'm not even sure which one I was referring to either.
